Different Types of Braces for a Variety of Needs

Each patient is unique. At Smile Suffolk Braces, we believe your treatment plan should reflect your individuality. What works well for one patient may not work well for another. That is why we offer several types of braces at our practice. Whether you are seeking faster treatment, more discreet treatment, or you are simply exploring your options, Drs. Thomas T. Taylor can help you determine which solution will best meet your needs.

Metal Braces

Durable and predictable, metal braces are the most common method of straightening teeth. Crafted from surgical-grade stainless steel, metal braces are comprised of brackets, bands, and arch wires. The brackets are bonded to the teeth surfaces, and the arch wire is then connected to the brackets. This method moves the teeth gently and safely into their new desired positions for a beautifully uniform smile. Traditional metal braces have improved significantly throughout the decades. Today, they are sleeker and more comfortable than ever before. Treatment time can vary for every patient. On average, however, it takes approximately 18 to 24 months to complete.

Ceramic Braces

In terms of function and mechanics, ceramic braces work the same way that traditional metal braces do. However, the brackets are fabricated from a high-quality clear ceramic, rather than stainless steel. Additionally, the elastic bands and arch wires are tooth-colored. Therefore, these braces are more inconspicuous than their traditional metal counterparts. For this reason, they are especially popular with our adult patients. Ceramic braces are more fragile, however, and are more prone to discoloration. Therefore, patients who choose this type of braces should limit staining agents, such as coffee, tea, and cola.

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

Patients desiring discreet treatment may benefit from Invisalign. This revolutionary system corrects misalignment using a series of clear, BPA-free plastic trays. Each set of aligners is designed by your doctor using digital design for fully personalized treatment. Best of all, the trays can be removed, so you can brush and floss with ease, and still eat your favorite foods! The treatment timeline for Invisalign is totally dependent on the severity of your case. However, it typically takes about 12 months. Invisalign is best for treating mild orthodontic issues. Our doctors can help you determine if this solution is right for you.

Invisalign® Teen

Teenagers are unique. They are certainly not children anymore, but they are not quite adults yet, either. When considering orthodontic treatment for your teen, it is important to choose a system that will meet their specific needs. Many of our young patients prefer a clear option – something that isn’t noticeable to other people. That is why we offer Invisalign Teen. This treatment option takes the basics of our standard Invisalign, and customizes it for our younger patients. For example, these trays include blue dot indicators that tell the patient and the doctor if they have been worn long enough to be effective. Additionally, Invisalign Teen offers up to six replacement aligners, free of charge. This option is an excellent choice for many patients, but it is not right for everyone. During an initial consultation, our doctors will be able to tell you if this could be a solution for your teen.
