Orthodontic Emergencies

Dental emergencies and trauma can be concerning for any patient. For those in braces, knowing what to do can make all the difference.

Be Prepared

Hopefully, you are never faced with a dental emergency. In the event that you are, being prepared will help you know exactly what to do. If you experience a true orthodontic emergency, please contact our office immediately. For common issues like a poking wire or loose bracket, we can often provide guidance over the phone.

Common Problems You Can Often Manage at Home

Many braces problems feel dramatic but can be handled safely until your appointment. If a wire pokes your cheek or lip, try gently pushing it into a more comfortable position with a pencil eraser or cotton swab, and cover the end with orthodontic wax. If a bracket comes loose but stays attached to the wire, leave it in place and call us. If you lose a spacer, a rubber band, or a small piece of an appliance, let our office know so we can decide whether you need a visit. Sore spots on the lips or cheeks can be eased with a warm saltwater rinse and wax over the bracket that is rubbing. Never cut a wire or try to remove an appliance yourself, and keep any pieces that come off so we can examine them. When in doubt, call us and we will guide you.

When to Call Right Away

Some situations need prompt attention. If you experience facial swelling, signs of infection, a blow to the mouth or face, a tooth that is loose, knocked out, or broken, or severe pain that does not ease, please call us right away. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or an injury that may involve the jaw, seek emergency medical care first. For after-hours concerns, our emergency line is 757-282-8252, and during regular hours you can reach our Suffolk, VA offices at 757-925-0407 or 757-686-3444. Save any broken pieces, and if a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root and seek care immediately. Quick action helps protect your teeth and keeps your treatment on track, so never hesitate to reach out.

Stay Calm — We Are Here to Help

True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but knowing what to do when one occurs can save you stress and protect your treatment progress. Most issues, like a poking wire or loose bracket, can be managed at home until your next scheduled appointment. For severe pain or trauma, contact our office immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Orthodontic Emergencies

What counts as an orthodontic emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, infection, trauma to the mouth, or a broken appliance that causes injury are considered emergencies. A loose bracket or poking wire, while uncomfortable, is usually not an emergency.

What should I do if a bracket comes loose?

If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges. Call our office to schedule a repair appointment.

What if a wire is poking my cheek?

Try using a pencil eraser to gently push the wire down. If it cannot be repositioned, cover the end with orthodontic wax and call our office. Do not cut the wire.
