Adult Orthodontic Treatment
A couple decades ago, it was almost unheard of for an adult to have braces. Today, adult orthodontic treatment is incredibly common. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists reports that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Orthodontic correction can be successful at any age, as long as the gums and underlying jawbone are healthy. At Suffolk Braces, we offer a variety of treatments for patients of all ages. If you are considering braces for improved function, health, and appearance, there is no better time than the present.
Benefits of Adult Treatment
Oftentimes, your smile is the first thing others notice about you. Crooked, gapped, or crowded teeth can take a toll on your self-esteem, and make an otherwise healthy smile appear jagged and unbalanced. Orthodontic treatment can address the cosmetic concerns you have, and give you the confidence to smile again. Because our doctors practice comprehensive orthodontics, you will not only look your best, you will also have improved function and oral health. After all, a well-balanced bite can significantly reduce your chances of developing tooth decay, gum disease, tooth erosion, headaches, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain.
Advances in the field of orthodontics have introduced new and improved materials and techniques. Today, treatment is more comfortable than ever before. Treatment times are also minimal, because we are able to plan much more accurately.
Treatment Options
Each patient is unique, and will therefore have specific goals in mind. At Suffolk Braces, we offer several types of treatment to meet the needs of our patients:
- Metal braces: Traditional braces are still the most common type of orthodontic appliance. Over the years, however, the design has become sleeker and more comfortable. Stainless steel bands, brackets, and wires gently move your teeth gradually into their desired positions.
- Ceramic braces: Many of our adult patients choose ceramic braces because they are more discreet. The mechanics are similar to traditional braces. However, the brackets are crafted from clear ceramic, and the wires are tooth-colored.
- Invisalign®: One of the most popular choices among our adult patients, Invisalign is a clear alternative to traditional braces. Rather than using brackets and wires, the Invisalign system gently moves the teeth using a series of removable, clear, BPA-free plastic trays.
Recommended treatment will entirely depend on the severity of your orthodontic condition. For example, if you have mild misalignment, Invisalign could be an excellent choice. For more severe problems, braces may be recommended for optimal results.
Things to Consider before Treatment
Life is busy. Between work and family responsibility, it can be difficult to find time for orthodontic visits. Typically, follow up appointments are necessary approximately every four to six weeks. We strive to make these visits short and simple. However, it is important to understand that routine appointments are a crucial element of successful treatment.
As an adult, orthodontic treatment must be approached as part of a comprehensive plan. Therefore, if you require periodontal therapy, it must be completed before your orthodontic treatment begins. Additionally, if you are considering other dental procedures, such as dental implants or cosmetic treatments, we will work with you to determine an appropriate timeline.
